Backdrops: Backdrops to Enhance a Theater Production

Backdrops

There are many different ways in which backdrops can be used in the theater. One of the most important considerations one must make when staging a backdrop is how easily it can be moved. It is very important for theater backdrops to be assembled and disassembled so the theater production can move from scene to scene in a timely fashion. If installed properly, backdrops can add a lot of life to a theater production. Props are items that actors can use to make the story come to life, while backdrops help put audience members in a specific frame of mind. Although backdrops are not necessary, they definitely make the play more interesting to watch. In addition, some actors feel more comfortable with inanimate objects to interact with. On the other hand, many actors feel like too many extra items on the stage are a distraction. The key to a successful theater production is an effective balance of props, backgrounds and actors.

Today, theater backdrops can look like just about anything. Theatrical backdrops did not always exist, however. This is a relatively recent innovation. In the past, theatrical expression relied much less on the actual representation of space and more on the conveyance of action and mood. For example, many Shakespeare plays have traditionally been performed without props or costumes so the audience is not distracted from the actors and their performances. Settings in the theater grew more and more realistic and peaked in the 1910s-1920s when David Belasco began to add extremely realistic settings. For example, he would create a diner with working soda fountains and freshly-made food. In addition, he was known for his advanced lighting techniques and use of color to evoke mood and setting. In general, today’s theater productions lean more towards realistic stage props and costumes.

Some people decide to create their own backdrops. This can be very difficult, depending on how big the backdrop is to be. For a school play, for example, it may not be very hard to have art students paint a backdrop for a whole scene. On the other hand, a large theater production will probably need a large backdrop. There are many backdrop rental companies that can help with this. Many of these companies have many pre-made backdrops that one can use for many different scenes. However, if one cannot find a good backdrop, there is always the option to make a custom one. Many background companies can make a backdrop using a picture that the customer provides.

Theater has really come a long way. There are many things one can do to make a play more memorable. Props, good actors, and backdrop rentals can really liven up a theater production and create a memorable experience for the audience!
